El Waziery (previously El Suhbagia) was founded in Ismailia in 1994 in cooperation with Mohamed El Waziery, the “King of Simsimia”, as he was called among the Canal Zone people. When El Waziry met Zakaria Ibrahim, they dreamt of replicating the El Tanbura experience that flourished in Port Said by gathering the retired suhbagia (local musicians of this tradition) and presenting a weekly performance in Ismailia. After El Waziry’s death in 2008, the band changed their name to El Waziery to memorialize their leader.
El Waziery performs every Tuesday in their home city and has performed for audiences in the cities of Port Said, Suez, Cairo, Alexandria and El Minya.
The album, “Walla Zaman”, produced locally by El Mastaba in 2006, features this band.
